The transformative Sydney Modern Project marks a significant expansion of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This landmark development designed by SANAA with executive architects Architectus has not only nearly doubled the Art Gallery’s exhibition space but also established new standards for environmental sustainability in design.
Guided by Richard Crookes Constructions (RCC) and a collaborative team of multidisciplinary experts, LCI has played a pivotal role in realising this vision. Our team delivered specialised design services in Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD), Mechanical Engineering and Vertical Transportation, offering innovative solutions to address sustainability challenges directly.
The Sydney Modern Project has achieved significant milestones, including the recent award of a 6 Star Green Star Design & As Built certified rating by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). RCC engaged LCI’s expertise to successfully manage the submission process with the GBCA and the rating represents international leadership in environmentally sustainable design and building practices. Features include 8,000sqm of green roof and landscaped areas with 50,000 Australian native plants, rainwater capture and reuse, 735 solar panels covering nearly 1,500sqm and the adaptive re-use of two former oil tanks.
These accomplishments underscore the project’s dedication to environmental standards right from the start, distinguishing it as the first public art museum in Australia to earn a 6 Star Green Star Design Review certification from the GBCA in 2018.
Awards: The project has been recognised with numerous honours, including the prestigious Sulman Medal for Public Architecture from the Australian Institute of Architects (NSW) along with the National Award for Public Architecture. Other awards include the Master Builders Association NSW Construction (Commercial) Public Buildings ($200m – $300m category) and Best Use of Steel, and most recently, the Australian Steel Institute Large Projects Award.
