Walsh Bay Arts Precinct

Walsh Bay Arts Precinct 1

CLIENT:
Richard Crookes Construction

YEAR:
2018 – 2020

PROJECT VALUE
$200M

The Walsh Bay Arts Precinct is home to the highest concentration of arts & cultural organisations in Sydney. Pier 2/3 exists as the final undeveloped piece within the precinct, with plans for adaptive re-use of the existing building to house a range of new arts facilities and events spaces. The design plays with the idea of heritage, respecting the industrial past while simultaneously adding a creative, contemporary spin to balconies, lifts and stairs in homage to former industry.

The Walsh Bay Wharves were constructed in the 1920’s and considered the ‘jewel in the crown’ of extensive harbour side developments. Extensive and careful planning and co-ordination with the subcontractors and builders along with proactive site inspections ensured that the upgrade works did not impact the heritage elements.

LCI’s building services involvement with the project included works to Pier 2/3, the lower 2 floors of Wharf 4/5 and the Shore Sheds refurbishment to create a dynamic creative hub for a range of dance and theatre companies.

A Sustainability Framework was developed to ensure that the vision of Walsh Bay being a sustainable and activated arts and culture precinct can be achieved.
